I Feel Worthless Because of Family

Family can shape how you see yourself, but being dismissed, controlled or singled out does not mean you are worth less.

First five minutes

  • Step away from the argument if it is safe.
  • Remind yourself: their behaviour is not a fair measure of my value.
  • Write down what happened in plain facts, especially if you need to tell someone outside the home.

What it can feel like

  • Feeling powerless, small, angry or invisible.
  • Feeling targeted because of gender, identity, emotions or difference.
  • Wanting to leave but feeling unable to.

Why it can happen

  • Family harm can come through control, discrimination, emotional neglect, misogyny, dismissal, shouting or treating one person as the problem.
  • Being used to it does not make it okay.

What can help

  • Find one safe person outside the home who can hear the full version.
  • Keep records of serious incidents if you need support from school, work, GP, housing or safeguarding routes.
  • If self-harm, abuse or immediate danger is involved, seek urgent help.

Free support options

  • Use family conflict and self-harm urges guides.
  • Speak to a trusted adult, GP, school safeguarding lead, domestic abuse service or local mental-health support if home is unsafe.

Questions people ask

Can family make mental health worse?

Yes. Being dismissed, controlled, insulted, discriminated against or ignored at home can seriously affect self-worth and safety.

What if I cannot leave home?

Focus on support and safety planning first: trusted people, local services, records of what is happening, and urgent help if there is danger.

Not sure where to begin?

You don’t need to know what’s “wrong”. Start with whatever feels manageable even if that’s just looking.
