First five minutes
- If the argument is active, step away if it is safe to do so.
- Write down the main issue in one sentence before trying to explain everything.
- Contact someone outside the home if you feel unsafe, trapped or ignored.
What it can feel like
- Feeling singled out, blamed, ignored or expected to keep the peace.
- Walking on eggshells or hiding how much you are struggling.
- Feeling guilty for being angry at people who are also struggling.
Why it can happen
- Family stress can be shaped by conflict, money pressure, grief, caring roles, separation, trauma, illness, control, discrimination or poor communication.
- Home can feel especially painful when people dismiss mental health, gender, identity or emotional needs.
What can help
- Choose one safe adult or trusted person outside the conflict to tell the plain version of what is happening.
- Use boundaries where possible: shorter conversations, leaving the room, not arguing when people are shouting, and protecting private space.
- If you are under 18 or feel unsafe, speak to a safeguarding lead, teacher, GP, youth worker or trusted adult.
Free support options
- YoungMinds has guidance for young people dealing with family problems.
- If home is unsafe or there is abuse, use local safeguarding, domestic abuse or emergency support.
