What it can feel like
- Waking up anxious without knowing why.
- A tight chest, racing thoughts or a sense that something is wrong.
- Feeling annoyed with yourself because you cannot explain it.
Why it can happen
- The body can react before the mind has words for what is happening.
- Sleep loss, caffeine, stress, hormones, trauma reminders, uncertainty, social pressure and health worries can all create anxiety.
- Sometimes there is no single cause. That does not make the feeling fake.
What can help
- Check the basics first: sleep, food, water, caffeine, alcohol, pain, medication and current stress.
- Ask: what has my body had to carry this week?
- Use grounding before analysis. A calmer body makes thinking clearer.
- If anxiety keeps returning or limits your life, consider speaking with a GP or mental health professional.
Free support options
- Read the anxiety and panic attack guides.
- Use NHS Talking Therapies or local support where available.
