How to Support a Friend Who Is Clingy

A friend can be deeply attached because they are scared, lonely or hurting. You can care about them without losing your own boundaries.

First five minutes

  • If your friend is upset, stay calm and avoid making promises you cannot keep.
  • Reassure without giving up your boundary: I care about you, and I still need time with other people.
  • If they threaten harm to themselves or others, treat it as urgent and get help.

What it can feel like

  • Feeling responsible for their mood.
  • Feeling guilty when you talk to anyone else.
  • Walking on eggshells to avoid distance, jealousy or threats.

Why it can happen

  • Clinginess can be linked to abandonment fear, trauma, loneliness, low self-worth, depression or unstable family experiences.
  • Understanding the reason does not mean accepting controlling behaviour.

What can help

  • Use steady, repeatable boundaries rather than long debates.
  • Encourage them to build more support than one friendship.
  • Get outside help if there are threats, coercion, stalking, self-harm risk or violence risk.

Free support options

  • Read fear of abandonment and friendship problems guides.
  • Use urgent support if anyone may be harmed.

Questions people ask

Can I support someone without being available all the time?

Yes. Healthy support includes boundaries. Being kind does not mean being on call constantly.

What if my friend threatens to hurt someone?

Take it seriously. Move away from immediate danger and contact emergency services or a trusted adult/service if there is any real risk.

Not sure where to begin?

You don’t need to know what’s “wrong”. Start with whatever feels manageable even if that’s just looking.
