Free Mental Health Help

If money is stopping you getting support, you still have options. Free help can include crisis lines, NHS services, charities, peer support, self-help tools and local groups.

What it can feel like

  • Knowing you need help but feeling blocked by cost, waiting lists or not knowing where to start.
  • Feeling embarrassed to ask for free support.
  • Trying to cope alone because paid therapy feels impossible.

Why it can happen

  • Mental health support can be confusing, expensive or uneven depending on where someone lives.
  • People often give up because the first route they try is not the right one.

What can help

  • Start with urgency: emergency help, crisis line, GP, local mental health team, charity or peer support.
  • Search by need, not just diagnosis: anxiety, debt stress, grief, abuse, addiction, loneliness, trauma or young people.
  • Keep a simple list of who you contacted and what they said. It helps when you need to try the next door.

Free support options

  • Use Thrive & Rise's local support finder and resource library.
  • In England, NHS Talking Therapies may accept self-referrals for anxiety and depression.
  • Charities and community services may offer free helplines, groups, information or signposting.

This guide is for education and signposting. It cannot diagnose you or replace care from a qualified professional. If you feel at risk, seek urgent local help.
