Burnout

Burnout is deep exhaustion after prolonged pressure. It often comes from carrying too much for too long without enough recovery, control or support.

What it can feel like

  • Feeling drained, detached, cynical, flat or constantly tired.
  • Struggling to care about things you used to care about.
  • Poor concentration, short patience, low motivation and a sense that everything is too much.

Why it can happen

  • Burnout grows when pressure keeps going and recovery keeps getting pushed away.
  • It can overlap with depression, anxiety, ADHD overload, caring responsibilities, grief or trauma.

What can help

  • Reduce the load before demanding more motivation from yourself.
  • Choose one recovery habit to protect: sleep, food, quiet, movement or connection.
  • Name what is draining you: workload, conflict, caring, money, loneliness, lack of control or lack of rest.
  • If burnout comes with hopelessness, panic, self-harm thoughts or inability to function, seek support.

Free support options

  • Use the Thrive & Rise planner to break the day into smaller pieces.
  • Look for workplace, school, community or NHS support before things collapse.
